India has achieved a major milestone in urban development. The Union Territory of Chandigarh has officially been declared the first slum-free city in the country. The administration reclaimed around 520 acres of land by clearing illegal settlements, including the Shahpur Colony, and ensured proper rehabilitation and alternative housing for affected residents.
A Historic Step in Urban Governance
After a 12-year-long campaign and persistent administrative efforts, Chandigarh has attained this landmark achievement. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav confirmed that following the demolition of Shahpur Colony, the city has now been officially recognized as a slum-free city.
Years of Efforts and Land Reclamation
The initiative began nearly a decade ago, with the administration systematically removing several illegal settlements:
In 2014, the largest Kalyan Colony was cleared, reclaiming 89 acres of land.
In the same year, Ambedkar Colony was demolished, restoring another 65 acres.
In 2022, the demolition of Colony No. 4 added 65 acres more to the city’s land bank.
Subsequently, Adarsh Colony, Sector-25 Colony, and Sanjay Colony were also vacated.
Realizing Le Corbusier’s Vision
Designed in the 1950s by French architect Le Corbusier, Chandigarh was envisioned as a modern, organized city free from slums and chaotic sprawl. However, migration and rapid urbanization led to unplanned settlements over the years. With the clearance of Shahpur Colony, that long-cherished vision has now become reality.
Resettlement and Urban Renewal
The initiative was not merely about eviction but part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan.Residents were provided alternative housing in Maloya, Mauli Jagran, and Dhanas, equipped with:
Clean drinking water and electricity
Proper waste management and paved roads
Skill development and employment support programs
Access to schools, healthcare centers, and community buildings
A New Beginning
The removal of Shahpur Colony marks not an end, but a new beginning. By eliminating decades of slum culture, Chandigarh is now moving toward planned, sustainable, and inclusive urban growth.
As India’s first slum-free city, Chandigarh has not only honored Le Corbusier’s vision but also set a model of inspiration for other Indian cities to follow. India envisioned in its master plans.
