Varinder Ghuman’s Death Sparks Uproar at Amritsar’s Fortis Hospital; Family Alleges Medical Negligence

Amritsar, Punjab | A massive uproar erupted at Fortis Hospital, Amritsar, following the sudden death of renowned Indian bodybuilder and actor Varinder Singh Ghuman. Family members and friends have alleged medical negligence during a minor surgical procedure that turned fatal.

From Minor Surgery to Tragedy

According to hospital sources, Ghuman was admitted for a planned arthroscopic rotator cuff repair with biceps tenodesis, a shoulder surgery performed under general anesthesia. Fortis Hospital said in a statement that the operation was uneventful and that the patient’s vital signs remained stable until around 3:35 p.m., when he reportedly suffered a sudden cardiac arrhythmia.

Despite immediate resuscitation by specialist teams, Ghuman could not be revived and was declared dead at 5:36 p.m. The hospital extended condolences, saying, “We deeply regret this unfortunate loss.”

Protests and Allegations

Following the announcement, a large crowd gathered at Fortis Hospital demanding an explanation from the management. Emotional scenes unfolded as Ghuman’s supporters accused the hospital of hiding crucial details and demanded the operation-theatre footage and complete medical records.

Witnesses said angry relatives shouted slogans and confronted hospital staff, accusing them of negligence and mismanagement. The situation remained tense for several hours before police were called in to maintain order.

Family’s Demand for Justice

Family members have urged Punjab authorities to launch an independent investigation into the incident, alleging that standard protocols were ignored during the surgery.

“We just want to know the truth — how can a healthy athlete die during a routine shoulder procedure?” said one of Ghuman’s close associates outside the hospital.

Fortis Hospital’s Response

Fortis Hospital maintained that all standard medical protocols were followed and that the team of specialists “did everything possible to save the patient.” The management also confirmed its cooperation with any official inquiry that may follow.

Who Was Varinder Ghuman?

Varinder Singh Ghuman was one of India’s most recognized professional bodybuilders and the first Indian to earn an IFBB Pro Card. He had also appeared in Punjabi films and was associated with several international bodybuilding brands. His unexpected demise has left the fitness and entertainment communities in deep shock.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities are expected to record statements from the doctors and staff involved in the surgery. Preliminary findings will determine whether a case of medical negligence can be registered.

As of now, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination, and supporters continue to demand justice for the athlete who inspired millions.
