New Delhi | A Dalit-Buddhist activist has sought the Attorney General’s consent to initiate criminal contempt proceedings against religious preacher Aniruddhacharya (Aniruddh Ram Tiwari) and YouTuber Ajeet Bharti, alleging that their statements incited an attempted attack on Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R. Gavai.
The complaint, submitted by Suraj Kumar Bauddh, founder of Mission Ambedkar, urges Attorney General R. Venkataramani to permit prosecution under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, which requires prior consent before private parties can pursue such cases.
Bauddh cited a viral video dated September 21, where Aniruddhacharya allegedly issued a threat against the CJI regarding a Supreme Court remark on a case linked to an idol of Lord Vishnu.
“If you want to get your chest ripped open, then let me know,” Aniruddhacharya is heard saying in the video, which triggered outrage across social media.
The activist also referenced Ajeet Bharti’s “provocative and contemptuous” commentary on YouTube and X (formerly Twitter), claiming it attempted to incite public anger against the judiciary.
Bauddh’s letter said:
“These statements and actions are aimed at provoking violence against the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India and other judges. Such public provocation is extremely dangerous and has gone viral, escalating tensions.”
He warned that failing to act could “endanger the independence of the judiciary and the democratic framework of India.”
Ajeet Bharti Questioned by Police
The Noida Police confirmed that Ajeet Bharti was questioned on Tuesday in connection with his social media post but not arrested.
“He was called for an inquiry regarding his recent post on X. He has not been arrested,” said an officer from Sector 58 Police Station.
Following the inquiry, Bharti posted on X: “I am fine. I was not arrested.”
Background: Shoe Attack Attempt on CJI Gavai
Earlier this week, Rakesh Kishore, a 71-year-old lawyer, attempted to hurl a shoe at CJI Gavai in the Supreme Court. The Bar Council of India has since suspended his licence, though the Chief Justice declined to press criminal charges.
Kishore later accused the CJI and the apex court of being “against Sanatan Dharma” and questioned Justice Gavai’s Dalit and Buddhist identity. Justice Gavai is India’s second Dalit and first Buddhist Chief Justice.
About the Accused
Aniruddhacharya: Religious preacher and social media personality known for his viral sermons and appearances on TV shows like Bigg Boss.
Ajeet Bharti: YouTuber, journalist, and social commentator known for right-wing political commentary and frequent criticism of mainstream media.
Both have previously faced backlash for controversial remarks.
If the Attorney General grants consent, this would mark one of the first cases of criminal contempt against public figures for remarks targeting the Chief Justice of India, potentially shaping future legal boundaries between free speech and judicial dignity.
